Lifehacker.com has an awesome website but one thing is clear – they know nothing about the mattress industry.

Life Hacker is a website property owned by website company Gizmodo.  Life Hacker provides simple but generally effective tips on how to maximize your daily life with their ‘life hacks’.  But featured contributing writer Stephanie Lee recently published an article that’s simply – wrong.

The piece titled ‘Four Popular Mattress Features That Don’t Actually Help You Sleep Better‘ is a quick consumer piece that attempts to discredit four design innovations in the mattress space.

One thing is clear – Stephanie writes great headlines that obtain a great click through rate.  To provide you a bit of background this was another popular post she recently published, ‘It Doesn’t Matter When You Eat‘.  Now – back to the mission at hand.  Dissecting her claim that these four popular mattress features don’t actually help you sleep better.

In order for Stephanie to establish credibility about the strong claim she references an industry authority – Consumer Reports.  Referencing the fact that ‘they went around testing hundreds of mattresses with various features’.  Unfortunately, she didn’t provide a link to any of these tests or reports to provide supporting documentation.  In an effort to validate these claims we did find the article on Consumer Reports that does reference these claims click here to view.

Why Lifehacker Shouldn't Make THESE 4 Statements About Mattresses

Feature #1 – More or Better Coils Equals Improve Sleep

More or Better Coils: At a certain number of coils, around 1,000, more does not necessarily mean better.  Further, the quality or type of coil doesn’t seem to noticeably impact comfort either.

Not all coils are created equal.  Watch this video below from Nebraska Furniture Mart as they explain the difference between coil type and technology.  Can you tell a difference between the coils?

Feature #2 – Hybrid Foam Layers Don’t Improve Sleep

These mattresses typically have a foam layer on top, which are supposed to improve the feel of the innersprings.  The foam varies in thickness from mattress to mattress, but for the mattress to positively impact ratings, the foam had to be at least several inches thick.

Two of many industry experts currently featuring high-end luxury Hybrid Mattresses include Nest Bedding and Sapira by Leesa.  A Hybrid Mattress by definition is a mattress that features a top foam layer and a bottom coil design.  The logic is that you’re gaining the best of both designs in one.

Here’s How Nest Bedding – The Alexander Signature Hybrid Creates Their Hybrid

According to Nest, ‘Our hybrid mattress gives your sleep support and comfort like no other. Combining the most innovative copper infused foam on the planet and the support of high quality individual coils with extra edge support, The Alexander Hybrid Signature Series is the most comfortable mattress on the internet. Now Featuring Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric on all Alexander Hybrid Mattresses!

Feature #3– Cooling Gel

“Cooling” Gel: Gel in your mattress is supposed to keep you cool while you sleep, which can improve your sleep quality, but they didn’t find this effect in gel-infused foam beds.

By infusing Memory Foam with gel beads and vertical ventilation, Kingsdown has discovered a way to allow heat to dissipate while still getting the comfort and support of a memory foam mattress.

Here’s A Mattress From GhostBed That Uses A Gel Memory Foam Layer

According to GhostBed, ‘High Technology Proprietary Gel Memory Foam.  Our middle layer consists of two inches, four pounds density of gel memory foam that uses our proprietary formula with larger cells to make it more reactive to the body for cooler nights‘.

Feature #4 – Extra Lumbar Support Improves Sleep

Extra Lumbar Support: Who doesn’t want extra support for their lower back? Unfortunately, it didn’t show any significant benefits.  That said, there were a couple of features that were worth looking into, but have nothing to do with comfort. For example, a removable mattress cover is nice for ease of cleaning, and handles on the mattress itself can make rotating it more easy.

For those of us who know the tortures of living with daily back pain, the extra lumbar support is the difference from waking up miserable and waking up feeling great.  There are many different factors that provide support but the general rule of thumb is mattress height for weight distribution and the density of the materials used.

World Renowned Tempur-Contour Offers Superior Firmness Support

Final Thought – Life Hacker offers great content across various aspects of your everyday life.  But without providing complete detailed explanations to support these claims and generalizing all mattresses that use these technologies are the same – Life Hacker runs the inherent risk of misadvising consumers.  Consumers should be properly informed of the different build types, materials used, and how each different manufacturer constructs their mattresses.  Publishing the blanket statement, ‘these four features do not improve sleep‘ is a reckless attempt to devalue manufacturer’s experience while writing off these technologies as ‘marketing lingo’.
