★★★★★ High hopes, but I'm sleeping on the couch

It hurts me to write this review for such a beloved product. Literally… I first became aware of this company when a blogger friend of mine wrote a sponsored post. I don’t usually pay too much attention to the kind of endorsements you see on sponsored blogs (“they gave this to us for free, naturally we LOVE it”), but I know these people & trust their integrity. So when, several months after the initial post, they wrote a follow up reiterating their praises, I was intrigued. I’d been looking for a new mattress for awhile and this company’s origin story was so relatable. I loved their mission, their philosophy, their business model. When I ordered my mattress directly from their site in January, I loved their efficient, friendly, but unobtrusive service. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the product.

I want to be clear that I’m not disputing the raves others have had. My blogger friends are 20-something skinny-hipsters while I’m a more ample Gen-X type. But three months in, it’s become impossible to sleep on. The center of the mattress, while no visible indentation is present, has softened so much that it compresses significantly and quickly under my hips as soon as I lie down. By contrast, the pressure on my shoulders is beyond firm – which, as I’m a side sleeper, can be pretty uncomfortable. It’s not possible to lie on this mattress for more than 2 minutes and maintain a neutral body posture. It’s a pain in the neck. Literally! Again!

As I said, the mattress snows no visible indentation, so I don’t think my problems fall under warranty or defective product. But I wanted to put this out there & let you know that if you’re a chubby side-sleeper, this probably isn’t the mattress for you. Pity.

Update: Upgrading from two stars to four. You’ve got to give a company props for working so hard to make their customers happy. I heard from customer service shortly after posting this review and was assured that the uneven firmness I’ve experienced is “definitely not normal” and offered a replacement at no charge. My new mattress arrives tomorrow and I’m comfortable saying that, even if this doesn’t turn out to be the perfect mattress for me, Tuft & Needle as a company gets my recommendation. They’re willing to stand behind their product and that’s impressive these days.

Second Update: Have now been using the replacement mattress for a couple of months and am happy to report that it remains very comfortable. It seemed slightly less dense than the first mattress from the beginning, but has provided a very pleasant balance of soft & supportive. I’m officially a fan and also very grateful to the fine folks at Tuft & Needle for taking the initiative to fix this…they have my utmost respect. It took awhile — but they’ve earned all 5 stars.

★★★★★ Goldilocks was wrong

There are a few things that you should always buy in person to check for quality.

Fresh fruit. Diamond rings. Cars.

Up until a few months ago, I would have added mattresses to that list. Wasn’t that one of the morals of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”? Most of us were taught that the moral was that a life of crime doesn’t pay and you really shouldn’t be sneaking into other people’s houses – especially if they are bears – but another, often overlooked moral was “not every mattress will feel JUST RIGHT. Try before you buy.”

When I saw T&N’s claim of a mattress with optimal comfort, I was skeptical. What worked for Mama Bear and Papa Bear wasn’t what worked for Baby Bear.

But T&N’s business model intrigued me as did their pricing structure. And if their mattress didn’t work out, I would return it and they would donate it to charity. Win-win.

I’m happy to report that Goldilocks was wrong. There are some mattresses that are JUST RIGHT for everyone. This is one of them. My husband and I both sleep well on our King mattress from T&N. The quality is fantastic. The business model is sublime. And my bank account is happy that I didn’t spend a small fortune on a bed.

So I guess you could say we’re living happily ever after.

Unlike Goldilocks. Who really shouldn’t have broken into the bears house.

★★★★★ After over a year, it's still perfect

I waited to do this review because when I was researching mattresses, I wanted to know how they held up. After owning this mattress for over a year, I can honestly say that this is the best mattress, hands down, that we’ve ever owned. We traveled recently and kept telling each other that we only had a few days left before we would be back to our own mattress. Falling into bed after we got home was an exquisite relief. We’ve owned innerspring, memory foam, and sleep number beds, and they don’t hold a candle to the comfort offered by the Tuft and Needle.
Every part of the mattress supports you so that there are no pressure points, just like the memory foam, but it doesn’t hold your shape, so if you roll over in the night, you don’t roll over into a hole–it springs back immediately to cushion you again. It holds a small amount of heat, but my husband, who is sensitive to temperature when he sleeps, doesn’t have any problem. For me, it’s enough to ensure comfort. After over a year of ownership, there are no sagging spots or indentations, and no loss of firmness. The mattress is just exactly firm enough for us because there’s support without pain. My husband needs a very firm bed for his back, and I prefer a softer bed. Memory foam was too soft for him, innerspring was too hard for me, and the sleep number was just a miserable experience for us both (yes, it’s sort of like the Three Little Bears around here!). The Tuft & Needle has what it takes to meet both our needs, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

★★★★★ Wonderful Mix of Firm and Soft and a Great Value!

We absolutely adore these mattresses! We got one for our 3-year-old as his first “big boy” bed and we all laid down on it and tried it out and loved it, so we bought a second for my 8-year-old! Easy to set up, easy to unpack, inflates quickly. It is a wonderful mix of the give of memory foam but the firmness of a solid mattress to get a mixed-feel mattress that doesn’t appear to be severe in either area. Very happy with the price vs. what you get and will happily purchase again — and will likely be replacing our king master bed with a Tuft soon!

★★★★ A lot to like about it, but just too firm

I bought this mattress because of an article I saw on the company featured in The Digg. It was an impulse buy, because our 10 year old mattress is getting the two grooves from our sleeping positions, and I really wanted something that was a lot thinner than our foot and a half thick mattress.

The bed arrived quickly, and when I pulled it out of the box and cut it out of its plastic wrap, it didn’t take long to “inflate” up to normal size. It was not stinky at all. I didn’t notice any smell at all. The cover for the mattress is nice. The mattress itself is just a block of foam. It’s nothing fancy at all. We slept on it for 2 nights before deciding it was just TOO firm. I like a soft, cushy mattress, this is true, but I’m a fit mid-30s woman and this hurt my joints. I am a side sleeper. My husband agreed that it was too firm, so we purchased a mattress topper for it. Problem solved. I would’ve liked to not have to get an extra mattress topper though, just to make it a comfortable bed. So, while I do appreciate the cost is much less than a “real” mattress, I feel like for a slab of foam with a cover around it, $400 isn’t too screaming of a deal. But I’m happy now with my bed. I got rid of the old outdated frame at the same time, and got a nice modern platform bed, and the whole set up is miles better than it was.

So, the mattress is great, as long as you want a firm sleeping surface, or be prepared to shell out another $140 or so to add that last bit of comfort.

Update: The company has reached out to me within 24 hours of posting this review, and is doing everything it can to make me a happy customer, so I have to say, I AM a happy customer. Good customer service is so rare these days, that I have increased my rating from a 3 to 4 stars, and would like to clarify that I do like the bed, once I solved the too firm issue.

★★★★ Great company, mattress a little too firm for me

I’d like to make it clear up front that I have returned this mattress as it was a bit too firm for me. However, I’m only subtracting 1 star because everything else about the purchasing process, the delivery, the mattress quality, and ultimately, the return process was worthy of 5 stars.

I purchased this mattress because I tried the Leesa mattress and found it to be extremely comfortable but too soft, with too much sinking in, especially at the hips. I slept like a rock on the Leesa, but woke up with lower back pain. We read that the Leesa is usually rated a 5 or 6 in firmness and the Tuft and Needle as a 7, so we ordered the Tuft and Needle.

The ordering and delivery process of the Tuft and Needle was great, couldn’t have been easier! It arrived very quickly and was very easy to set up. The mattress had only a very faint odor (the Leesa smelled stronger and the smell took longer to go away). At first, the firmness of the Tuft and Needle was a welcome relief, but after a few nights it became clear that it was just too firm for me, causing me to toss and turn and wake up with some numbness in my shoulders. Many have reported that the Tuft and Needle softens up after a week or two, but we didn’t notice much difference after a week, and had to switch back to the Leesa. I suspect that much of the differences in how people experience these mattresses is due to weight and body type. I’m tall and curvy, with hips substantially wider than my shoulders, so my hips sink too much on a mattress that’s too soft and my shoulders take the pressure on a mattress that’s too firm! However, this is such a subjective thing that I’m sure this is the perfect mattress for many people.

The returns process was amazingly simple. I sent an email about returning the mattress and someone immediately got to work finding a donations service to pick the mattress up. Unfortunately, because of state laws and other issues, there didn’t seem to be anyone willing to pick it up. The Tuft and Needle team offered arrange a recycling service to pick it up as well as some other easy options, but I am going to arrange to borrow a truck and donate it though, cause I’d hate to see such a great mattress go to waste!

Bottom line: this is a great company and a great mattress, it just happened to be a little too firm for me! If you like a firmer mattress, the Leesa is going to be way too soft, but the Tuft and Needle will likely work out.

★★★ The jury's still out, but so far it's just too firm. Update - still too firm, going to return it

I stumbled across Tuft & Needle while looking to replace our over-priced “high-end” latex mattress that had been a real “pain” for the last couple of years. We took the plunge a couple months ago and took a Tempur-pedic for a spin, no such luck there. Anyway, after chatting online with one of T&N’s reps over the Memorial day weekend, I decided to give it a shot and decided to purchase a king size mattress directly through Tuft & Needle since they currently offer a 100 day return policy as opposed to the 30 day with Amazon.

It took a little over a week to arrive, primarily due to the holiday weekend, thankfully shipping is free! I’m spoiled by Amazon Prime shipping, so waiting that long was a little rough!

Unfortunately I wasn’t home when it arrived (I was excited to see how it “came to life” so-to-speak). Nonetheless, my wife and son opened it and allowed it to expand in all of its glory and “breathe”.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the nice cover and it seemed like a pretty good quality mattress, nice workmanship. The other thing that took me by surprise was when I layed on it – the first thing I noticed was the bounce. Not a “shake the whole bed” kind of bounce, but more of a controlled bounce. The other thing I discovered was how light the mattress is – light enough that it’s easy to accidentally shift the mattress as you’re trying to put on sheets. I prefer this to a ridiculously heavy mattress that takes two powerlifters to move it!

So, how does it sleep, you ask? Well, after the first two days of sleeping on it, both my wife and I had back aches and tossed and turned throughout the night. I’m generally a side sleeper and had to flip from side to side as the pressure on my shoulders would cause them to fall asleep. My wife encountered the same, although not quite as bad since she’s a back and side sleeper. This thing is firm.

After the second night we had to revert back to putting our memory foam topper on it. This was better in that the pressure on the shoulders was gone, but ended up causing a little extra soreness in the back upon waking up….and the memory foam topper makes it sleep hot. So unfortunately as it stands now, I’m a bit disappointed with the mattress. Trying something different tonight, we have a twin “cool” memory foam topper that is now on my wife’s wide of the bed and I’m going to give it a go with nothing but the mattress again, hoping it has softened up a bit more now that we’ve had it for just over two weeks. I REALLY don’t want to have to add a mattress topper to the bed, I think that kind of defeats the purpose. Definately not a long term solution as it stands now, but I just really want to give this mattress a thorough shot as I really like T&N’s business model and philosophy. If the rating was based solely on the company and customer service, I’d have no problem giving it 5 stars,

UPDATE 7/29/15: almost two months have gone by since we’ve had this mattress, although it *may* have softened ever so slightly, it’s still way too firm for us. Too many nights of tossing and turning, as a side sleeper, this mattress has been wreaking havoc on my shoulders and lower extremities. A mattress topper helped, but it made the bed too squishy and hot. So, we’ve decided to return it.

While I really like this company and they’re excellent service, after reading many of the amazon reviews I feel like the star ratings for the Tuft and Needle mattress paint a different picture than what is portrayed in the actual reviews. In my opinion, giving a product a 5-star rating, yet returning it because you’re not satisfied/it doesn’t meet your needs, is a disservice to other prospective customers. Please don’t get me wrong, their customer service is fantastic. Whether due to personal preference or not, the product didn’t meet my needs for a solid good night’s sleep, plain and simple.

★★ I really wanted to love this mattress... but I don't.

After many years of service (probably too many), my wife and I decided to replace our big name brand memory foam mattress as it had developed permanent soft spots where we lay.

I spent a lot of time looking at different options online, and found the Tuft & Needle videos informative and entertaining. They offer a generous 100 day in home trial (unless you buy from Amazon – more on that in a moment) with the mattress likely to go to charity per their website if you do not like it. When I saw they are on Amazon with Prime shipping, I was sold.

So here is the short and long of it:
1) If you do buy this mattress, do not but it from Amazon. The 100 night trial does not apply, and mattress is subject to Amazon’s 30 return policy. You don’t like it? Of course you can return it, just pay return shipping and……
Have you ever considered trying to pack and send back a queen size mattress? Sure, it comes compressed and vacuum sealed in a box, but anyone have a queen size bed press and vacuum sealed at home? Yeah, me either.
Oh, and from their website in case you are interested (direct copy/paste): “PLEASE NOTE THAT BOTH THE 100 NIGHT TRIAL POLICY AND LIMITED WARRANTY APPLY ONLY TO ORIGINAL PURCHASERS OF GENUINE TUFT & NEEDLE MATTRESSES WHO PURCHASED THEIR PRODUCT(S) DIRECTLY FROM AN AUTHORIZED TUFT & NEEDLE DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL AND, IN THE CASE OF THE 100-NIGHT TRIAL, ONLY TO THOSE PURCHASERS WHO PURCHASED DIRECTLY FROM TUFT & NEEDLE.”

2) If you are a side sleeper, and don’t enjoy shoulder pain, run. Run now.
This bed is firm. To firm. Well, in most places. It is oddly extra firm on the sides and softer in the middle. I would blame a box spring, if I used one, but this is sitting on a solid foundation.
When my wife and I are both in bed, we both hurt. The only time I get a comfortable nights rest is when she is working overnight and I sleep in the middle where it is softer. No too squishy soft. Just comfortable. Like I thought the whole mattress would be.

3) Made in the USA by a company owned by real people. I like this, but not at the loss of sleeping well and having a happy, well rested wife.

I am sure this mattress is right for a lot of people to have the ratings it does, but if you buy, buy direct without the benefits of Amazon Prime. The cost of not doing so are much greater.

★ One star for sleeping on the equivalent of the floor

Hard. As. A. Rock.

I wanted to love this mattress. Set-up was a breeze, it is lighter than my old pillow top queen and the smell is gone so fast. The fabric covering it even feels soft enough to sleep on it by itself (if you had to.)

BUT. It is painfully firm. Back-slaying, sleep-destroying firm. If Motel 6 beds are softer, you know you are doing something wrong. I spent the hours between 3-5 (since I couldn’t sleep and by then my back was dying) reading the other Amazon reviews which I didn’t spend enough time doing before. Everyone gave 5 stars but more often than not, the rating was for the customer service they got RETURNING the mattress.

Someone from T&N should really spend a couple hours going through and counting how many reviews saying these mattresses are too firm to how many like the firmness. If there are more complaints than not, time to readdress the formula.

I’ll update this. Of course, I already ordered a foam topper because that solved the problem for everyone else who didn’t want to go to the hassle of getting yet another new bed. I think the bed will be a great foundation, it just needs a bit more cushion on top. I do feel like, if you are on the heavy side, you would sink into their cushion more and be happier with it. The sides of the bed when you sit on them sink in just fine.

The Tuft & Needle is a popular mattress that is sold online only. It’s made from a proprietary foam which I find to act most similar to latex (good comfort/support tradeoff, good bounce, doesn’t sleep hot). The standout thing about this mattress is the price – for this quality, the price is well below other mattresses, even the other online-only companies.

Note: the mattress is firmer than average. I happen to like a firm mattress, but if you’re looking for the sink-in plush experience, other mattresses will be a better fit.

Tuft and Needle also offers a generous 100 day return policy, meaning you can return the mattress for a full refund within 100 days of receiving the mattress. I like this model because actually sleeping on a mattress is a much better way to see if it’s a good fit, rather than just laying on it in a store for a few minutes.

The Tuft and Needle Mattress is the company’s highest-rated mattress sold on Amazon, and also the highest-rated product in the online retailer’s giant furniture category overall.
Not too soft, not too hard-it’s a universal comfort that’s been fine tuned to evenly and comfortably distribute your body weight.

Pressure relief as good as memory foam, and sleeps cooler than memory foam and latex.

Has bounce for night activities and easy of getting in and out of bed, with localized movement that prevents disturbing sleep partners.
An honest, hassle-free 10-year warranty you can actually use

Tuft & Needle sent us a King size mattress to do a video review!

This is our second mattress from Tuft & Needle. We had the first one almost 2 years and it never stopped being comfy. (It’s in the guest room now.) It’s been about 3 weeks since I recorded this, and this new version of their mattress is shaking out to be just as comfortable – if not more.

It should be noted the beat up box is a result of our community FedEx driver (thanks, dude). The mattress, however was unharmed. Our first mattress from T&N was apparently delivered by someone who cared about your stuff!
